Getting Started with Essential Oils
Sometimes when learning something new it can be overwhelming and even scary. You may feel like you have to throw everything out and start over when you start to realize what is lurking in the products that you currently use.
Rest assured, you do not have to “throw the baby out with the bathwater” as they say, instead you can take this step by step. I am here to hold your hand and walk you through this one step at a time. Taking a little bit of information at a time and implementing it is what has helped me learn what works for my family.
What are Essential Oils?
Essential oils are a substance derived from plants. They are distilled from shrubs, flowers, roots, fruit, rinds, and herbs. Essential oils work with your body and help to support the various systems of your body.

Why Use Essential Oils?
Essential oils can help with everything from hormones to brain health and healthy weight to emotional support.Essential oils work with your body and help to support the various systems of your body including:

- Endocrine system

- Immune system

Not All Oils Are Created Equal
Using quality therapeutic grade essential oils is so important.
Many brands of essential oils fill their bottles with fillers and only a few drops of what they are advertising. For example, you may get a bottle of lavender essential oil, expecting it to contain lavender oil. After years of just buying whichever brand I found on the health food store shelves, I learned that all essential oils are not created equal.
So, when you buy a bottle of lavender essential oil you could actually be getting mostly a cheaper oil filler, chemicals, and other fragrances. That was disappointing to me and defeated the purpose of using essential oils which was to find a natural alternative to the chemicals, but instead, I was still getting chemicals and artificial fragrances.

3 Ways to Use Essential Oils
There are three ways to use essential oils:
1. Aromatically – Breathing in oils is an amazing and quick way to get the benefits of essential oils. It is just that simple, open the bottle take a deep cleansing breath!
Another way to get the aromatherapy benefits of essential oils is to put them into an ultrasonic diffuser. A diffuser that does not heat the oils is what is recommended here. Heating the oils will void the living therapeutic benefits of the oil.
2. Topically – Your skin is the largest organ in your body! It absorbs what you put on it! Which is why it is so important to put good quality ingredients on your skin. When using an essential oil topically you may want to mix it with coconut oil or another carrier oil and test it on a small area to see how it feels on your skin. There are some oils that are considered “hot oils”, like cinnamon that will feel warm when placed on your skin. Or peppermint that has a cooling sensation when applied.
Another thing to note is that citrus oils can react to sunlight. Did you ever put lemon juice in their hair to lighten its color in the summertime? Same idea. So, if you plan on applying a citrus oil or other UV sensitive oil, be sure to apply it in a place that won't be exposed to sunshine.
3. Internally – Not all oils are made to be ingested. There are certain oils that can be ingested, you want to make sure you are using therapeutic grade A quality oils that are meant to be ingested as a part of their use.
