If You Only Choose One Oil

Lavender is my go to oil for so many things, but especially for self care. My very favorite way to use lavender is to diffuse it. Which is to say I put a few drops of it into my ultrasonic diffuser along with some water and watch as the cool mist blankets our home with calm.

Why Use Essential Oils for Self Care?

Incorporating nature into your self care can bring so many benefits to your emotional and physical wellbeing. One way to do this even on your busiest days is to use essential oils. Just the aroma (aka aromatherapy) of essential oils alone can have so many benefits.

Here’s what you need to know about oils.

If you are brand new to using essential oils here’s a great guide to get you started. Once you have found a good quality brand of therapeutic grade oils. Here’s the brand I use and recommend.

Here are the 3 main ways to use essential oils:

1. Aromatically – Inhaling certain essential oils can help to bring about certain emotional states. For example, when I inhale lavender I feel more calm. Breathing in oils is an amazing and quick way to get the benefits of essential oils and add to your self care routine. It is just that simple, open the bottle take a deep cleansing breath! I also love to use a diffuser so that everyone can experience the benefits of the oils.

2. Topically – Using essential oils topically is a great way to enhance your self care. Everyone’s skin reacts differently to different oils. Testing the oil on a small patch of skin is always a good idea. I typically use a carrier oil, like fractionated coconut oil that dilutes the essential oil and helps to smooth it over your skin.

Note: When applying oils to skin there are some oils that will have a warming sensation when placed on skin, such as cinnamon. And other oils can have a cooling sensation when applied, like peppermint essential oil.

When applying citrus oils, note that they can cause you skin to be extremely sensitive to sunlight. Be sure to only apply citrus oils when they won’t be exposed to sunlight or to areas of skin that will be protected from the sun.

3. Internally – Adding a drop peppermint of oil to your tea, a couple of drops of lemon to your water or a drop of cinnamon or clove to your cooking can be a great way to bring in the self care benefits of essential oils into your life.

Note: Not all oils are meant to be ingested. You want to make sure that you are using pure therapeutic essential oils that are meant to be ingested. I recommend Young Living’s Vitality line of Oils for internal use.
