Ready To Learn How To Dance Like Nobody’s Watching?
Inside the Soul Care Mom Village the other day, a mom shared that her two year old breaks out into dance spontaneously, even without music on.
And this made my heart smile SO BIG.
When was the last time you broke out into dance with just the music in your heart?
Or when the music is on and playing and you find yourself tapping your foot to the beat, do you allow yourself to dance like no one’s watching?
Dance Like Nobody’s Watching Quote
“You’ve gotta dance like there’s nobody watching,
Love like you’ll never be hurt,
Sing like there’s nobody listening,
And live like it’s heaven on earth.”
― William W. Purkey
What’s the difference between the toddler who so freely moves to the rhythm of his heart and the more rigid adult?
It’s simple and yet not so simple.
It’s our mindset.
It’s the layers of thoughts and beliefs we’ve piled on top of our childlike nature.
But the good news is that your playful heart, that playful part of you is still in there waiting, wanting, craving to come out to play.
One of the things I love supporting moms with is tapping into their playful side, because not only does tapping into that playful part of yourself help you to have more fun as a parent, as a mom, it also means you’re able to connect with your kids on a soul level and be more present with them.
Ready To Dancing Like No One’s Watching?
And it leads to what most of us moms crave, which is stepping out of stress and anxiety and enjoying motherhood to the fullest.
So let’s dive into some inspiration to help you embark on your journey of being a more playful mom.
When you can tap into your playful side, you are able to find that flow state. And be in that creative space.
So I encourage you to get curious, to find things that bring you joy, find things that make you feel like a kid again.
One of those things for me is we have a playset in our backyard, and I love to get on the swings and swing. That feels so freeing to me and so playful.
So it can be simple things like that. When you’re at the playground with your kids, can you join in on the play?
It can also be something as simple as spending time with your pets, doodling, or spending time in nature.
If you’re feeling adventurous or creative, you could try something new like painting, salsa dancing, or whitewater rafting.
The important thing is to find something that feels fun to you and brings you joy.
But there still might be resistance to being playful, right?
You maybe know that you want to do these things, but you don’t take the time for them, you might say, Well, that sounds nice, but when am I going to find time for that?
When you find yourself resistant to playfulness, notice what your mind is saying.
Is it telling you that…
–you’re going to look too silly
–you don’t have time for shenanigans
–you’re too old to learn something new
–maybe you’re too old to learn something new
–you have more important things to do
And once you identify what your story is, and what your mind is saying, then ask yourself, in the words of Byron Katie, ask yourself, “Is it true?”
Is following your heart, leaning into wonder, and being playful and silly, really not worth your time?
Or could it be what leads you to live the life you’ve been longing for? But your world has been covered up with the shoulds and expectations and responsibilities and all of the weight of what comes and all of the weight that comes with it.
When we tell ourselves that this isn’t important or it’s not worth our time, can you see how we wouldn’t have much motivation to prioritize these ways of being?
I invite you to ponder, get curious, and explore the things that light you up and make you smile.
These little moments of playfulness infuse little moments of playfulness into your day and gently watch your mind when resistance comes up.
As you do this, you’re not only setting a beautiful example for your kids so they can witness what it looks like to follow your passions and enjoy life, but you are also creating a deeper connection with them because you’re able to be more fully present with them and connect with them on this playful level and have fun being a mom.
Allow yourself to be that playful mom that you’ve always dreamed of being!
Here’s How To Dance Like Nobody’s Watching: Step By Step Guide
Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you connect with your playful side.
We often find ourselves buried under a mountain of tasks, each one labeled “urgent” or “important”. But amidst all these things there’s an urgent need we tend to overlook – the need to be ourselves, to let loose, to enjoy, and to simply dance like nobody’s watching.
There’s no need to master complex dance moves or choreography. We’re simply talking about the freedom of expressing ourselves through movement.
Let’s break it down!
Step 1: Giving Yourself Permission
First, and most importantly, you have to give yourself permission to move in ways that feel good to you without needing to be perfect.
There are no rules that dictate what dancing should look like. The main focus of dancing should be how it feels in your body. It’s about the freedom and joy that comes with allowing your body to move and sway in whatever way feels good to you.
Step 2: Create Your Safe Space
Choose a place where you feel most comfortable, maybe your living room, bedroom, or even the kitchen while you’re waiting for the pasta to boil.
You might like to choose a place where you have some privacy. Over time, you will become more comfortable and won’t mind where you are when the urge to dance strikes.
Step 3: Find Your Groove
Find music that moves you. This could be anything from classic rock to soothing instrumental music, from smooth jazz to pulsating electronic dance music.
It doesn’t matter what genre it is, as long as it inspires you to move. Create a playlist of your favorite tunes, and let them guide your movements.

Step 4: Start Moving
Now comes the fun part. Press play and start moving. Don’t worry about what you look like.
Instead, focus on how you feel.
Allow your body to feel and move with the music. This might mean swaying gently, jumping around, or shaking everything you’ve got. There’s no wrong way to do it. Just keep moving and let the music guide you with its soulful energy.
Step 5: Embrace the Silly
If you feel silly while dancing, embrace it!
The point is to enjoy yourself. If you stumble over a step or move awkwardly, let yourself smile and embrace the process.
Let go of any expectations and just be in the moment.
BONUS Step 6: Keep Going
The more you dance, the more natural it will feel.
Infuse dancing and movement into your day. It could be a few minutes in the morning to energize you for the day or a dance break in the middle of your daily chores to check in with yourself and move any stagnant energy through your body.
Remember, dancing is about freedom to be ourselves, to express our emotions, and to let go of the constant pursuit of perfection.
Dancing like nobody’s watching is about enjoying the moment and reconnecting with our sense of joy and playfulness.
So turn up the volume, close your eyes, and let the music guide you.
Here’s to you, beautiful dancing queen!
